Strangely enough, Luna Rossa starts well; punctual at the start line, fast, decided to take the left-hand part of the course all is laid upon the weather forecast they had. America One has to take the right-hand side of the course, where the wind shows up. The two boats take opposite bearings windward. Cayard increases his lead in meters/second. DeAngelis seems lacking self-confidance, having relied entirely on a weather forecast (and you know how relliable those are!)

The boats meet at the first buoy: America One is already going downwind and has 1'19" to manage. America One's vang requires repairs, impeding tacking manœuvers; Luna Rossa tries to take advantage of this by taking another route: another gamble that fails. From then on, Cayard manages his adversary and the lead, nursing it to a 1'09" level at the finish.

Stranamente Luna Rossa parte proprio bene; puntuale sulla linea di partenza, veloce, decide di tenere la sinistra del campo di gara confidando ciecamente nelle previsioni meteorologiche neozelandesi che davano un buon vento da quella parte. America One è costretta sulla destra. Il vento, però, arriva proprio da lì. Le due barche si separano alla partenza . Cayard guadagna metro su metro su un De Angelis davvero privo di fiducia in se stesso, al punto da affidare la finalissima della Luis Vuitton Cup ad elementi così incerti come le previsioni meteo.

Le barche si "ritroveranno" solo alla boa dove gli Americani giungono con 1' 19" di vantaggio. Inizia la boa di poppa con un disguido al vang di America One che è costretta a non strambare; Luna Rossa tenta di recuperare occupando la parte opposta del campo in attesa di un groppo che non ci sarà mai. Cayard ha la parte con più vento e con quel distacco può controllare agevolmente l'avversario e vincere con 1'09" di vantaggio.

Contraire aux habitudes, Luna Rossa part bien. Coupant le fil de départ à la seconde près, l'embarcation part sur la gauche à la recherche du vent promis par les météorologues. America One se voit obligée d'aller à droite, où le vent se manifestera. L'avance de Cayard augment en mètres/secondes. De Angelis semble privé de tout moyen et se fie aveuglément aux promesses des gens de la météo.

Si, les bateaux se croiseront à la première bouée: America One sous le vent et Luna Rossa au vent avec une hypothèque de 1'19". En poupe la retenue de America One nécessite une intervention, empêchant des manœuvres; Luna Rossa tente de profiter de la situation en cherchant un bon vent sur l'autre côté du plan d'eau, mais échoue de nouveau dans sa mise. Il ne reste plus à Cayard que de gérer son avantage: 1'09" à l'arrivée.
