A perfect start.. really! We have rarely seen such punctuality at the start line. Unfortunately, it was not enough to reach the first buoy with a lead.

In the start-up phase, Coutts wants the right-hand side of the course, while De Angelis goes left. NZL60 is the first to tack after the start, being covered by Luna Rossa. The first two encounters have Luna Rossa in the lead, however the next two are well executed by the kiwis and they gain a 22" lead at the first buoy.

The downwind leg starts badly for the Italian crew, with the Genoa jib that creates problems when being hauled in. Coutts and crew earn precious seconds and Luna Rossa is too far to try any surfing or covering the kiwis' wind. The lead is extended to 36". The situation worsens for the Italians on the windward leg, where they had the habit of gaining a lot: they are distanced by 1'06" at the buoy.

The next downwind leg raisses expectations where Luna Rossa manages to eat away 38" from the lead and only 25" seperate the two for the last windward leg.

Disaster strikes. Or rather an incredible error by the Prada team, where they decide to do an extra tack before reaching the layline costs them extra manouvers and time rounding the buoy.

The last downwind leg? A pure formality. New Zealand 1 - Luna Rossa 0.

Partenza impeccabile... E' veramente così: la partenza è perfetta. Quasi mai abbiamo visto tanta puntualità sulla linea di partenza durante le regate che ci hanno accompagnato fino a qui. Purtroppo però, la partenza non è sufficiente per virare alla prima boa di bolina davanti.

Nella fasi preliminari Coutts vuole ed ottiene la destra del campo di regata mentre De Angelis va a sinistra. Dopo la partenza il primo a virare è NZL60 dopo essersi trovato nei rifiuti dell'avversario. Luna Rossa è davanti e, sia il primo che il secondo incrocio evidenziano questo vantaggio. Bastano due altri incroci e NZ è davanti arrivando alla prima boa di bolina con un vantaggio di 22''.

La poppa inizia subito male per l'equipaggio Italiano che ha problemi con il genoa che non vuole venire giù. Coutts e compagni guadagnano sempre più e Luna Rossa è troppo distante sia per coprire l'avversario sia per provare ad avvicinarsi sfruttando l'effetto surfing. Il distacco alla boa di Poppa è di 36''. Sfortunatamente la situazione peggiora sempre più. Anche nel lato di bolina, dove la nostra barca ci ha abituato a recuperi sensazionali riusciamo ad avvicinarci. Il distacco è 1'03''.

Bello ed avvincente verso la fine, il secondo lato di poppa dove Luna Rossa rosicchia ben 38'' all'avversario giungendo alla boa con un distacco di soli 25''.

Disastroso l'ultimo lato di bolina al termine del quale vi è un errore incredibile da parte del tattico della barca di Prada che decide di compiere una virata in più prima di raggiungere la lay line. Si aggiunge distacco al distacco che alla fine sarà di 1'08'' all'ultima boa di bolina.

L'ultima Poppa? Una pura formalità. New Zeland vince con un distacco di 1'17''. New Zeland - Luna Rossa 1-0

Un départ incroyable: rarement avait-on vu autant de ponctualité à la ligne de départ. Malheureusement, ce ne fut pas suffisant pour garder une avance à la première bouée.

Au cours des phase préliminaire, Coutts cherche la partie droite du parcours et De Angelis lui cède en allant à gauche. Après le départ, Coutts est le premier qui doit virer, étant dans le refus de Luna Rossa. L'avance se maintient pendant deux autres croisements, puis les manœuvres ne sont plus parfaites d'un côté et NZL 60 se trouve en tête - 22" secondes à la bouée.

Le bord sous le vent commence mal: le gênois refuse de rentrer placidement. Coutts et compagnie en profitent pour gagner de précieuses secondes et mettre suffisemment de distance entre eux et les italiens pour que ces derniers ne puissent pas faire de surf ni leur refuser le vent. L'écart se creuse à 36". Au prochain bord, malgré que Luna Rossa nous avait habitué à de belles performances au vent, l'avantage kiwi augmente (1'03").

Le deuxième bord sous le vent régale plus d'intensité: Luna Rossa grignotte 38" et ne se trouve plus qu'a 25" de l'adversaire. Tout est possible.

Tout est possible, le déasastre compris. Un choix tactique erroné amène Luna Rossa à faire des manœuvres supplémentaires et virer à la bouée plus lentement. L'écart ne fera plus que se creuser. Le dernier bord? Une formalité. Nouvelle-Zélande 1 - Luna Rossa 0.
