Bad Penalty Luna Rossa could have earned a victory on the basis of a stronger boat downwind. But lost it due to very agressive tactics. The winds died down to finally allow racing. The start and first beat were even, with oneWorld rounding the first marker with a 10-second single boat lead. Downwind, LR showed its traditional superiority and attacked oneWorld, to the point of taking a lead. But leeward tactics are peculiar. Spithill managed to gybe and be windward and regain a clear lead. Then Luna Rossa regained its speed and pushed oneWorld past the layline and then gybed to round the marker. Peter Gilmour asked and obtained a red-flag penalty - one that requires that the penalty be taken immediately - for having violated the rule for sailing above the proper course. From there the rest of the race was academic. Notwithstanding, the final margin of 33 seconds was narrow enough to consider that the penalty was effectively the deciding element. There appears to be a constant here. De Angelis has strong downwind tactics. Nearing the markers, whether upwind or downwind, De Angelis has been agressive every opportunity he has had. But nearing the downwind marker, Spithill seems skilled in creating difficulties for De Angelis. Caveat emptor. Another constant seems to be that Luna Rossa still has to find some adjustments windward to earn a tad tighter angle towards the marker. Otherwise all races with oneWorld (and eventually Oracle) will be just to tight. And it will be virtually impossible to beat Coutts. * * * * * Coutts is one win away from the LV Cup finals. This time, a race he trailed was decided by a major wind shift in his favour. Surprise, surprise...
