Nil - Nil
An exciting day at the match race. The result was never a certainty for any team during the first four legs. Luna Rossa, overcoming bad position windward, would manage to take the lead downwind.
Unfortunately on the first two leeward legs, LR had the additional handicap of having two spinnaker pole breakages and a spinnaker tear.
Luck being a two-way street, oneWorld had to wrestle with a blown spinnaker on the last leg, but at that point their lead was such that the victory was not mortgaged in any manner.
Over and above the final result, it is important to value the relative perfomances of each team.
Tactically, Spithill only made a mistake at the start, being pushed into an unfavourable position during the pre-start phase.
However, he showed extremely good tactics to compensate for oneWorld's speed disadvantage downwind, forcing Luna Rossa to make violent gybes and lose speed.
Upwind the boat may be slightly superior, but they did have the advantage of position on the right-hand side of the course.
On the Luna Rossa end, Rod Davis clearly won the start even though the boat was by default entering from port. Why he or the crew did not choose to go to the right-hand side of the course is a question that needs clarification.
Windward, Luna Rossa kept pace and thus the major disadvantage from the start of the competition is history. Leeward there is an obvious superiority.
The big disadvantage is that Luna Rossa seems to have returned to its bad habits and displayed chaos on board, excluding the moments of breakages...
Off-water, the Arbitration Panel had docked oneWorld onePoint; so in essence this was a good test match. Meanwhile, in the other race, Coutts is really looking like the man to beat...
