Patience has Its Virtues

Most of us went to sleep given the wind conditions. However late afternoon breezes tend to pick up in Hauraki Bay and Flight 3 started within minutes of the prescribed time frame (time frame which should be extended somewhat in our view).

Jesper Bank was sensibly more agressive at the start, getting good speed in 12-15 knot conditions. Both skippers executed match racing by the book, making about 20 gybes windward, but Orm with starboard priority round the marker with 9 seconds.

In these average wind speeds, Luna Rossa did not show any speed advantage windward. So it seems the boat is on target for the kiwi summer racing conditions (thus the LV Cup final and the AC), but there are still questions regarding springtime sailing.

Still, Luna Rossa still maintains an edge downwind, due to superior gennaker sails and solid tactics. LR took the lead on the first leeward leg, and shortly thereafter Orm broke their spinnaker pole and took a penalty.

From there on it was all a matter of coverage... and data gathering! For now the word is: Bring on oneWorld!
