Slight Differences
Similar weather forecast today. Yesterday, Barker was slick in getting out of a tight position. He was the first to show where they wanted to go. After two slight shifts (one for each) a third stronger one marked the end of the first beat. Maybe LR was undecided or thought to exploit better the leftie. Still LR showed good tacking & gybing, as well as being competitive downwind. The two teams really worked well on their weaknesses. |
| Team | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | Total |
| New Zealand | 1 | 1 | | | | - | - | - | - | 2 |

Split tack start, both well timed. But Spithill worked hard to gain the right and had less speed off the line. A boat length & a half lag is costly tactically. They just cannot run into the corner. So it's into a tacking duel and this is TNZ country. They extend their lead.
The lead is extensive enough at the mark - 25 seconds - to make Torben's work to expoit shifts first on the leeward leg.
No major puffs. So back to duels, but with two teams that are well oiled, few errors are noted. LR does cut things in too tight at the gate, so in addition to a 35 second delta, lower speed out of the gate. TNZ, and one does not expect any major mistakes from them, is in full control of this match.
And possibly the final. Barker's pre-starts have made the difference. Spithill's run was never going to be eternal. Today he had to gamble to get the right. It is the first race's development which may be less acceptable. Still each race is to be raced on their own. The only drawback for LR is that the room to manoeuver is tight.
Tomorrow will weigh very heavily in the end result of the LV Cup.
